What is an Upsell: Why is it Important and How will it Increase Your Profits?

Upselling, as a marketing tactic, has been used longer than the internet has been around. One upsell that you’re likely most familiar with is the request to purchase insurance with a new appliance or a car wash with gas. An upsell is simply adding additional related  products or services to an existing sale that has already been made.

The trick with upsells is that you want to add value to what your client has already purchased. That is what makes them so effective, and if you can through in a good deal, then you should watch your conversions and sales go through the roof.

A good upsell is something that makes both the buyer and seller feel like winners. For instance, the insurance policy gives the buyer the assurance that if something goes wrong during the active period of the policy, it will be taken care of… it provides peace of mind.

Adding an upsell can increase your income (and profits) significantly. It happens every time you go to a restaurant and or even the pharmacy. “Would you like fries with that?” “Thanks for shopping with us; would you like a flu shot?” Any place you go, if they have smart trained sales staff, or a sales funnel, you will be offered something to go with what you just ordered.

Your upsell products should be:

  • Irresistible – If you know your client well, and also use technology to its fullest, you can easily offer a buyer something that they cannot refuse. Combined with a limited time offer, or special one-time discount (OTO – One Time Offer) your upsell should entice the buyer to take action.
  • Valuable – Your upsell should offer “real” value to your customer and be related to your offer. It should not be something you threw in without thought. In some cases your upsell could even be of much higher value than the original purchase.
  • Usable – The upsell needs to be something practical and of immediately benefit to the buyer so that they can easily make a decision without having to put much thought into it.
  • Related – Upsells that are somehow related to the item that your customer purchased will be more likely to be purchased during the upsell offer period. For example, if you sell an ebook, you could also sell a video course that walks them through the content in the ebook.

Remember, your upsells don not have to be lower price, or even a different product. Depending on what it is you could offer a month’s supply or recurring subscription… and it certainly can be a higher ticket item. Ultimately, it is up to you, and your niche. InstaBuilder 2— This is a WordPress based plugin and is really the only other sales page / sales funnel builder that we recommend and use. Why… because in some cases we have WordPress sites where the use of InstaBuilder is just convenient. It does not have all the features of an enterprise solution such as Clickfunnels, but it is adequate and does not have a monthly fee. But it also does not have the protected membership site functionality, autoresponder, text messaging, and cool functions either.

I will say however, InstaBuilder 2.0 has a great editor that is simple to use, and many advance features in its page builder that I have not seen in any WordPress solution, and it does have a sales funnel builder in the pro version and for us, is easily a top choice.

 

LeadPages— There has been a huge amount of hype around LeadPages over the past few years. It is certainly one of the premier ways to create squeeze pages, webinar pages, opt-in forms, etc. I am a pro member myself but will not be renewing when the year is up. Here’s why…

I find the biggest downside to LeadPages is that you are limited to their templates which cannot be fully customized. So if you intend to be creative with how you want your pages to look, you may find Lead Pages very limiting like I did. That can make it rather straightforward to use as well, if you want to keep things simple, but it does not build sales funnels, only pages separate from one another, which you would have to interlink together.

It is on the expensive side for what you get, but many online businesses use it everyday and it is touted as one of the top solutions out there. Click here to find out more.

 

OptimizePress— This is a WordPress based plugin and theme that is in good standing with the online marketing community. With hundreds of plugins and themes out there, OptimizePress 2.0 is still the one to beat on WordPress.

It offers many awesome abilities such as a drag and drop visual page editor, the ability to create different product launch funnels and membership pages, but it doesn’t do everything and the editor is a little clunky.

It’s main limitation is that it is completely WordPress driven and still requires other third party solutions to effectively run your business or site. But overall it is still a good option, and better than the new WP Profit Builder from Sean Donahue that was just released. While it is much less expensive, and marketers are promoting it as the OptimizePress killer, let me be frank… It is not and needs a lot of work!

Each of the options above are premium options. But so what? This is your business we are talking about. If you can’t afford it then you have other more important questions to answer and maybe you should opt for a cheaper solution. But just do it right.
